WCAMI Artists Martine MacDonald and Patricia Izzo Open at Rivers Edge Gallery on November 22, 2014

November 24, 2014

On Saturday, November 22, 2014, Rivers Edge Gallery hosted a lively and well-attended reception for artists Martine MacDonald and Patricia Izzo.  The exhibit, hung salon-style, was packed with compelling works that defied easy categorization.

MacDonald’s works varied from large 3′ x 3′ diam.  tondo paintings, the most successful of which, to my mind, was Evidence of Things not Seen, to small landscapes.  My particular favorites were elegant assemblages composed of small, dark brown/black picture frames made of wide 4″ wood moldings onto which the artist had collaged various oddments: bones and stones,  paint brushes and chestnut husks. In the center of these frames were tiny landscapes which gave one the voyeuristic feeling of peering through a keyhole into another world.  A poignant, almost melancholy mood emanated from these exquisite miniature cabinets of wonder.

Patricia Izzo’s work continues to blur the distinction between photography and painting.  Many of the works begin with staged photographs in which the subject is costumed in some mysterious and intriguing way.  While she starts with a photograph, she often does not end there.  A particularly successful example of her method is a large photograph of her daughter dressed to suggest an Asian beauty.  The original photo is printed in a fairly small 11″ x 14″ format,   then poly-chromed with oil washes.  The resulting picture is then reprinted on thick velvet paper in its final, large format.  The effect overall is dreamlike, exotic, poetic.

Both artists seem to be at their best when evoking nostalgia for lost times, places, loved ones.
